I remember a friend of mine telling me a year or so ago about Queens, New York MC Homeboy Sandman, but for whatever reason, I never ended up hearing the guy. That kind of stuff happens a lot–there’s just too much music to research it all. That said, if you want to make sure I hear your music, all you have to do is release it on Stones Throw Records, and I will most definitely get around to it. Now that Homeboy has done just that with his new EP, it’s all up in my ears, and damn this guy can rap.

The EP, titled Subject: Matter is described by Homeboy himself as being six “songs dealing with content no one has ever rapped about before in the history of rap music. Unfortunately not a difficult thing to do.” That’s pretty true, but more than the subject matter, this guy’s lyricism is what stands out.
I really can’t wait for the (hopefully) inevitable Madlib/Homeboy Sandman collab project. THAT would/will be some Grade A hip hop.
